Waveya Moves to Allegro con fuoco from Dvořák’s 9th
Posted by Chris Charles on Friday, June 06, 2014Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony, traditionally know as Symphony No. 9 was by far his most popular musical work. Composed in 1893, while Dvořák was the director of the National Conservatory of Music in America, the piece’s fourth movement, “Allegro con fuoco,” starts in E minor, goes through a realm of dynamics, accented by strings and horns, finally intensifying at about the 11-minute mark until it builds to a climatic crescendo, ending in E major.

Whatever Happened to Morning?
Posted by Chris Charles on Thursday, February 09, 2012
Korean girl group Morning was a unique foursome of very beautiful ladies who, in 2003, scored a hit single with a dynamic ballad entitled "I'll Make You Happy," off of their one and only album; Return to the Innocence. Above is the official music video for the song. Exemplifying the group's uniqueness here is violinist Jang Min-kyung, whose solo adds an excellent embellishment to a part that would ordinarily feature a guitar or keyboard.
The other members of the group were Shim Seong-hee (Lead vocal), Kim Bu-yeon (Second vocal), and Baek Bo-ram (Rap, narration, and vocals). They couldn't be considered a band since only Min-kyung played an instrument besides sang, but they definitely weren't the typical K-pop female vocal group, either. Perhaps that's why they didn't seem to find their niche and disbanded after just the one album.
Asian Lady Rockers
Posted by Chris Charles on Wednesday, March 16, 2011There seems to be a plethora of Asian all-girl vocal groups where the girls just sing (or lip-sync) while doing choreographed dance routines during performances. However, there aren't as many Asian all-girl bands, where the members are performing the music as well as the vocals. Many of these bands are considered underground, because their music is usually harder and not compatible with the sound of the more "bubble gum" girl groups that are so popular throughout Asia.
Even though Asian all-girl rock bands haven't enjoyed as much widespread media exposure in their countries that their pop counterparts have, some have earned international fanbases. The prime example above is Scandal; four hot female rockers from Osaka, Japan. They are from left to right; Tomomi Ogawa (bass, vocals), Haruna Ono (vocals, guitar), Rina Suzuki (drums, vocals), and Mami Sasazaki (guitar, vocals). You won't find these ladies on the same bill with Morning Musume.
All I Want for Christmas is You
Posted by Chris Charles on Tuesday, December 23, 2008
Here's the music video to Vince Vance and the Valiants' holiday hit "All I Want for Christmas is You." (Please DO NOT confuse this song with the Mariah Carey song of the same title.) Originally recorded by the band in 1989, the song was re-released in 1993 and has since become the most played Christmas song among country radio stations in the US. The brilliant vocalist behind this number is Lisa Layne (aka Vickie Valiantette), who is NOT the lady who appears in the above video. The lady you see here is former Miss Ft. Worth Lori Nunn, who does a very fine job of lip-syncing. Merry Christmas!
Foxy Singer and Model, Da-ham
Posted by Chris Charles on Monday, April 07, 2008I first noticed Da-ham (23) two years ago as half of the Korean singing duo "Foxy" when her and partner Gemma sported World Cup cheer gear and performed in the fan festivities in Korea. A reader reminded me of her when he linked to her Cyworld blog in the comments on the entry on Oahm Da-hye, that I shared with Asian Sirens.
Da-ham (whose real name according to her Cyworld is Choi Eun-shil and according to her Daum bio is Choi Yea-ram) and her singing partner Gemma (Lee Hwa-young, whose Cyworld is here) are known more for their sex appeal than their singing talents. In fact, it was hard to find any photos of either one of them actually singing. In addition to modeling and singing in little more than swimwear, Da-ham also adds some spice to a Korean TV comedy show called Real Gag.
